For a January birthday, or anyone watching the clock on a resolution.

A cotton flour sack towel, hand-embroidered with the carnation, January's birth flower. The flower everyone underestimates, and the last one standing in the vase. Dusty pink blooms, sage stems, one deep red bud. Washed twice, so it's already settled. Flour sack cotton is what our grandmothers kept for glassware and bread dough, because it leaves no lint. Throw it over the first loaf of the year while it rises.

The clock is blown glass from West Germany, made between 1949 and 1990. The cap is stamped W. Germany. Copper case, mica frost down the sides, hands painted at five o'clock. It has been five o'clock for decades. In January the guests go home, the calendar fills back up, and the clocks start again. This one is in no hurry.

Hang it on the tree through New Year's. After that, it keeps time on a bookshelf, badly.

Condition: Towel is new, embroidered by hand and washed twice. The clock is vintage, with no chips or cracks. The paint and mica show their years in places, and the colors may have softened from the original.

Arrives in a kraft gift box, ready to give.

Towel: 28 × 28 in, 100% cotton. Clock: 4 in tall × 1¾ in wide.
